How to Buy Cheap Android phones

Thu, 05/17/2012 - 12:46AM by tenqon 0 Comments - 2 Views

Cheap Android phones, in the market these days, are mostly priced in the $200-$400 range, especially the ones that make the hottest whistles and bells. Even on promotion, for a first time subscriber, the iSTAR I9220S from Sprint is priced at $259 and the high-end smartphones even higher. However, a huge variety of cheap smartphones running the Android OS, are available with all major carriers.

Below are some options to bag a cheap smartphone.

Android smartphone deals

A good way to save on new android phones is to buy them on promotion. You're likely to find great deals if you happen to be a new customer as you're more likely to stick to a two-year contract, which again is most likely to roll over upon expiry. Moreover, of many so-called cheap android smartphones, the operator is increasing the monthly charges because of high data usage.

How To Choose Between Android or Windows Smartphones
Even with that, never expect a 4G cheap android smartphone to deliver high speeds, regardless of the area.

Unlocked android phones

Another method of saving money is buying cheap unlocked android phones, instead of new ones. The deal involved in an unlocked smartphone is that the software which locks the SIM card to a particular manufacturer is removed. You can simply take out the SIM card from the old handset and insert it into the unlocked android phone. An unlocked android phone could be either cheap or expensive, if they're under the warranty. They usually do not come with one. They could be refurbished or come directly from the manufacturer. It's best to go around the market and search for the best unlocked smartphone deals.

Prepaid android phones

A great way to get a cheap android smartphone deal is to buy one with a prepaid plan. A prepaid android smartphone may not be cheaper as regards the cost of the phone. However, you can end up saving several hundreds each year if you opt for cheaper unlimited data plans. At a flat fee of about or so each month, which is definitely much less when compared to the or the plus tax scheme that most operators would charge you for a two-year contract. Several companies, including many reputed ones, are now offering prepaid android phones, many of which come equipped with sophisticated features. Make sure you check them out if you're looking for cheap android smartphones. Besides, under such a scheme, you can scrap the contract any time sans any need to pay a hefty termination fee that most operators charge.

While a cheap android smartphone may sound impossible to get, the truth is, you have to scour for suitable offers and promotions. Only then you can buy cheap android phones and cheap unlocked cell phones.

iPhone: Apple to boost screen size in next version

Wed, 05/16/2012 - 11:42PM by tenqon 0 Comments - 1 Views

The new iPhone screens will measure 4 inches from corner to corner, one source said. That would represent a roughly 30 percent increase in viewing area, assuming Apple keeps other dimensions proportional. Apple has used a 3.5-inch screen since introducing the iPhone in 2007. Zenithink C91

Early production of the new screens has begun at three suppliers: Korea's LG Display Co Ltd, Sharp Corp and Japan Display Inc, a Japanese government-brokered merger combining the screen production of three companies.

RELATED: 20 iPhone tricks and tips everyone should know

It is likely all three of the screen suppliers will get production orders from Apple, which could begin as soon as June. That would allow the new iPhone to go into production as soon as August, if the company follows its own precedent in moving from orders for prototypes for key components to launch. Zenithink C92

Apple's decision to equip the next iPhone with a larger screen represents part of a competitive response to Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

Samsung unveiled its top-of-the line Galaxy smartphone with a 4.8-inch touch-screen and a faster processor earlier this month.

With consumers becoming more and more comfortable using smartphones for tasks they once performed on laptops, like watching video, other smartphone manufacturers have also moved toward bigger displays.

AESTHETICS AND DESIGN

A likely shakeup in the design of a larger-screen iPhone could go a long way in boosting its "wow" factor, convincing fans to trade in their old iPhones for new ones, said Shaw Wu, an analyst at Sterne Agee.

"Not only do users pay for features, but they also pay for aesthetics and design. That's as important, or more important, than features," Wu said. "People love the current design -- but it's 18 months old."

The latest iPhone 4S was introduced in October of last year and essentially has the same form factor as the iPhone 4, launched in 2010. Zenithink C71

Samsung, which this year became the world's largest cell phone maker, sold 45 million smartphones in the first quarter, and sales of the Galaxy phones outstripped the iPhone.

Cell phone Accessories To Our Android Overlords

Wed, 05/16/2012 - 1:52AM by tenqon 0 Comments - 1 Views

Best cell phone Accessories For Our Android Overlords. There's no device I love to hate as much as I hate to love my iPhone. (You read that right.) Your mileage may vary; you may not feel like both a chump and a devotee while caressing your Android whatever. Until I attain your Zen-like state, I feel annoyed whenever I find myself buying presents for my best Android phone, even if they are practical and make using my phone a better experience. Here's the drill on three extras I've been using lately.

G-Form Extreme Grid iPhone Case: Drop your phone one time ONLY on the bus and you'll wish you'd shelled out for a case. It's like Apple is intentionally propping up the case market by using that slippery exterior. I used an Otter Box on my iPhone 3, but I've come to prefer the weird grippy exterior of the G-Form on my iPhone 4. People keep making fun of the almost tire tread like bumpy black box I wrap my phone in, but the fact is, it stays put in my hand and has enough padding and bounce that my phone didn't shatter into tiny expensive bits when I dropped it on the 54. There was an audible gasp from the people around me, but I just picked up my phone and went back to listening to vintage sci-fi radio theater and posting pictures to Instagram.

The case comes in black or black and yellow. I kind of wish I'd got the yellow just because it would make the phone easier to find when it's lost in my backpack. Cost: about $40. That might seem expensive, but it's going to cost you more than that to buy a new phone.
Mophie Juice Pack Plus: With great addiction comes the endless search for outlets and places to recharge the phone, right? You can buy yourself a lot more time with a spare battery. Mophie builds theirs into an attractive case that allows you to double the use time of cheap unlocked cell phones. I think this case/battery combo is pretty freaking great. It serves to protect your phone, and gives you all that extra use time, and it comes in a bunch of happy colors. I dropped my phone in this case, too, because apparently, that's how I roll. The case is a little scratched up, but it still works just fine and my phone is still totally intact. It's charged via a mini-USB cable. You leave it off until you need the extra juice, then it charges your phone while you use it. It's great for long-haul flights, especially if, like me, you spend your airtime with audio entertainment.

Able Planet Clear Harmony Sound Isolation Earphones: I've gone through half a dozen pairs of iPhone compatible earbuds. On my last trip I lost my isolation Sennheisers. The sound was top notch, but I was on my third pair because they kept breaking (while still under warranty, thankfully). I replaced them with a really cheap pair of JVC iPhone compatible headphones, and they broke too.

I like the isolation earbuds because they don't take up the space of headphones, but I've yet to find a pair that reduces external noise the way active cancelling headphones do. I like the Able Planet brand just fine; they're far superior to the standard Apple earbuds and they stay put, but I'm not totally sold. They sound great, don't get me wrong, and they do help with noise reduction on the plane or the bus, but that crying baby still found his way into my head while I was trying to doze on the plane. Even with the white noise app I use, ambient sound leaked in through everywhere. Able Planet makes active noise cancelling headsets too, I own a pair, and I wish I'd packed them instead. I await perfect, affordable, noise blocking earbuds.

Report: Google Planning Five New Phone Jellybean 'Lead Devices'

Wed, 05/16/2012 - 1:43AM by tenqon 0 Comments - 1 Views

Google reportedly plans to give multiple android phone makers early access to its next version of Android in an attempt to create a more robust ecosystem to take on Apple and also to reassure partners that its Motorola Mobility acquisition won't squeeze them out.

The new strategy would be a major shift away from Google's current practice of working with a single maker of smartphones or tablets on a "lead device" based on a new Android 4.0 phones release, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

Google's strategy with its Android mobile operating system has already shifted several times over the years. In early 2010, the search giant produced its own co-branded Android-based smartphone, the Nexus One but had shut down that venture by the summer of that year as sales of other Android-based phones began to take off.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Google was planning to once again begin selling co-branded Android-based devices built by third-party device makers through its own online store. Another take on that report was that Google would manufacture its own Android tablets this year through Motorola Mobility, the consumer arm of Motorola that Google acquired for $12.5 billion in 2011, and sell them in the online store.
But if that venture remains on track, it seems Google may want to involve key hardware partners in the launch of new Android products instead of hitting the market first with its own in-house devices or cheap android phones and tablets built by a single partner.

Google could launch new devices running its next version of Android, dubbed Jellybean, with as many as five manufacturers, according to the WSJ, which said a source described a "portfolio of 'Nexus' lead devices that include smartphones and tablets" that's due to arrive by Thanksgiving.

Those new android phones and tablets would be sold unlocked in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, via the Google online store and through certain retailers, the newspaper reported. Buyers would have to fork out more for a device and purchase contracts from carriers separately, but users would also be able to run apps like Google Wallet that are blocked by some carriers on subsidized phones, the WSJ noted.
Google also "hopes the effort will help rev up sales of Android-powered tablets, which have lagged behind Apple's iPad and Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire," the paper reported.

Apple’s Siri silly or android on best cell phone question?

Mon, 05/14/2012 - 2:08AM by tenqon 0 Comments - 1 Views

Apple’s Siri silly or smart on best cell phone question? It’s all over the news – Apple’s Siri says the Nokia Lumia 900 is the “best smartphone ever”, thanks to answers contained within Wolfram Alpha, although getting the Lumia answer depends on which question you ask.

When the news broke that Apple’s own Siri, the smart talking seductress of the artificial intelligence world, was pumping products that weren’t from Apple, there was widespread incredulity.
After all, doesn’t Apple control the answers that Siri delivers? Isn’t Siri really a real-live woman sitting inside a metal room as depicted on the Big Bang Theory?

Well, while Apple certainly must have some control over what Siri says, many of Siri’s answers come from Wolfram Alpha, the “computational knowledge engine” that is trying to be all that Google isn’t.

Indeed, Apple has ensured that Siri has clever answers to questions or commands like “open the pod bay door”, “will you marry me”, “where can I hide a body” and many more that Siri users the world over have undoubtedly tried on many, many occasions.

So, when I read the news, I too tried asking Siri “what’s the best android phone ever”, as all the news reports noted.

Here, I got the smartalec Siri, the one that answers “the one you’re holding”, or “you’re kidding, right?” amongst some other sweet nothings digitally not-so-whispered via loudspeaker.

I thought to myself – ah, Apple has pulled strings behind the scenes to ensure the “embarrassment” of Siri showing, via Wolfram Alpha results, that a Nokia Lumia 900 was the best, was gone.

But it made me wonder: was I asking the right question?

A quick check of some other reports on this very issue showed me that some people were instead asking Siri “what’s the best unlocked cell phones ever”, as US "cellphone" users sometimes say, rather than "smartphone".

So, I tried asking that question instead.

Lo and behold, instead of the expected clever Siri comeback, I get Siri’s notification that she’s looking that up for me.

Then came the result I was looking for – the Wolfram Alpha “printout” showing me, based on those same 5 results that presumably no-one else has yet added to, that the Nokia Lumia 900 is indeed the best ever, complete with a picture of the cyan coloured model, just as I’d seen in the press.

If Apple has indeed changed the answers for the “unlocked android phones”, perhaps the crunchy company is still yet to do so for the “best cellphone ever” question.

Whatever the truth of the matter, the reality is simple. Siri isn’t a seductive real-life woman sitting in a metal box as seen on TV.

Siri doesn’t even have a real gender – as an amazing piece of software, how can it?

Siri is a software based form of artificial intelligence that uses the best answers available at the time, based on Siri’s understanding of what you’ve said, and as we all know, Siri is still in beta.

Thus, unusual or unexpected answers are bound to happen from time to time, no matter how smart Siri eventually becomes – something even humans are known to do too, even if we are supposed to be naturally intelligent, rather than artificially.

So, the Siri sideshow will keep rolling on, performing tasks, “obeying” commands and answering questions – even if sometimes, Siri teaches us to expect the unexpected.
